Religion and Spirituality in Religion.

Sigmund Freud states that religion protects people from confronting reality (Abrams, 2023) in which simply said he did not believe religion and therapy could co-exist. Some religious people ask if their seeking therapy mean they lack faith. However one’s religion and mental health are not exclusive just as one who had their tooth pulled would not be faithless from seeking dental support.

Those who include mental health treatment and spirituality or religion into their month was reported to have better health outcomes. Better health outcomes included less pain, lower rates of hospitalizations, better functioning, cardiovascular outcome, mental health, strengthened support, and greater survival (Luccheti, G., Koenig, H., 2021).

It is not clinician’s job to judge or manipulate anyone’s beliefs of thoughts however our goal is to provide insight, feedback, and understanding to the information to be provided. Therapy provides the space for one to explore purpose, meaning, and understanding of what they believe without the projections of the world.  Utilizing spirituality in the therapy session allows for participants to confront the realities with the support and comfort of their resource (God or whatever their higher being transcended self is) (2023).

It is okay to not be okay, it is okay to have questions about life, and it is definitely okay to ask for and seek support without shame, guilt, or fear. No God I’m aware of shames their people for seeking support. A Clinician should be able to handle the information about one’s belief but may be curious. As clinicians we are curious about everything as it’s the guide that helps us to provide feedback with wisdom and understanding. It is not our job to agree or disagree with a belief or decision as we may not agree with it but your life is not ours and we have all been given free will in this life and all are free to believe, do, go, and have all that has been given to them.

Utilizing spirituality and religion in therapy is not exclusive from one another in our physiological system. As one would see a dentist, a doctor, or any other medical special would should consider seeing a mental health specialist as mental health specialist provide space to process, reflect, educate, give new skills, and train those seeking support.

For one to transcend to their actual self they must know their own beliefs. “Know what you believe in or this world will tell you(Antoinette Drayton-Battle (my momma)). Stating that this world will lead you to heaven or hell and if you don’t know what you believe in the world will choose for you. So believe what you believe and doubt what you doubt but never doubt what you believe (Bishop Jeremiah Reed). Utilize your belief with the support of Licensed Specialist that you may find the mental wealth you need to thrive and be one’s whole self.
